SEBORGA
Three flags for a small village: the Italian one, that of its Principality and the Orange one of the Italian Touring Club
We are not far from the Principality of Monaco: Seborga too is a small principality, that still today has its king, its laws and its coinage. All this is for promotional and folkloristic purposes, but it is done with style. In 1729 the village, of medieval origin, became a true principality; history then linked its fate to the Italian Republic, but something has remained.
The holder of an Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club, its historic area is an tangle of alleys that lead to the main piazza, with the seventeenth-century San Martino Parish Church with a Baroque façade, and the Monks' Building, the old place of the Mint and still visitable.
The Luigino was the old coin made in the Principality of Seborga. Today it can be purchased as a souvenir together with postage stamps at the Government Building. Luigini are also used as “coupons” that can be spent in the village. An original idea to revive the past and to keep alive the traditions of the village. An interesting feature is the permanent display of musical instruments, which includes 135 much appreciated old instruments (produced between 1744 and 1930) collected both in Italy and abroad. Growing flowers is typical of Seborga, with mimosas and “Seborga broom.” Events not to be missed are the Feast of St. Sebastian on 20 January; The Spring Feast in the Easter period with a painting festival and the outdoor Floral Compositions Contest; the Feast of St. Bernard on 20 August with a historical-folkloristic procession and standard-bearers.
